Does hard water affect your hair?

The water hardness is defined by the ion concentration of calcium and magnesium. Hard water is high in dissolved minerals, both calcium, and magnesium. When washing your hair, you need to use more shampoo to wash effectively as the washing performance is partially neutralized by the ions. The hair could feel rough and brittle after having been washed with hard water.

Furthermore, hard water affects hair dye and coloration doesn’t last as long. Soft water, which contains less of these ions, makes the hair otherwise supple. When shampooing, the shampoo foams well and less product is needed. Nevertheless, the hair must be rinsed out for a long time and there is often product residue in the hair. This creates the feeling that the hair gets greasier faster.
