A beautiful conversation we had with GOODMEN COVER GUY actor Brandon Butler

Brandon Butler is one of those people you meet, and you know he’s a “star.” He has this quality about him where he draws you into his story and presence. I say this from personal experience as I was lucky enough to work with Brandon. In my gut, I always knew he was meant to be something. For those of you who want to know what Brandon is like--he is by far one of the most positive, genuine, and down to earth people you will ever come across, and yes he is indeed, but that one is obvious (laughs).

P.S. Congratulations Brandon on landing a regular series role in the new hit series ‘Trinkets’ for Netflix! We can’t wait to see it!

Who is Brandon?

I think I’m a pretty laid back guy, so nothing too crazy. So on a typical day off, I’d like to catch up on sleep. Then usually either work out, go hiking, or at least hang out with some friends. Follow that up by grabbing some food and then end the night with a movie or show. That pretty much sums me up.

Some of my most favorite things:

Okay, I know this probably sounds generic, and I want to pick something else, but I feel like it would have to be my phone. Without Waze or Google Maps I’d have no clue where I’m going when I’m driving. I mean, I do know some parts of LA where I don’t have to look on Waze or Maps, but the majority of the time I do have to look (laughs). I’m also always checking sports scores(I’m a big baseball, basketball and football fan), social media, etc. So, yeah, I’d say without my phone, I’d be lost, literally.

What’s your favorite cocktail and who would you love to have drinks with?

Ooo, that’s tough. Tons of actors and athletes pop up in my mind. But, I think if I were to sit down with anyone, it’d have to be Steve Carell. I’m a huge fan of “The Office,” and I think he would be hilarious to sit down and have a drink with-- I would laugh my ass off. My drink of choice would probably be a few Coronas or a Gin and Juice, maybe both! (laughs). My first question would be how he and the rest of the cast contain their laughter while filming. I’ve seen the entire season of The Office at least two or three times, so I can go on and on with questions to ask Steve.

Share a little on how you landed the roll on 13 Reasons Why:

It was a dream come true for me to be a part of that show and everyone there is so great to work with. I remember sending a self-tape to my manager for the role of Scott. Then a few days after that, I was told that I had a callback in-person with Brian Yorkey. Honestly, it was all a blur because I was so excited and anxious, I felt like it happened so quickly. And luckily, later that night my manager called and told me I booked the role of Scott. I couldn’t believe it, I thought I was getting Punk’d and Ashton Kutcher would come out and tell me it was all a joke(laughs). The first person I called to share the news with was my mom. My whole family has always been incredibly supportive and giving, but my mom had to be the first one I called. She’s been through it all with me, all the ups and downs of the business, she’s been the one I lean on the most. It was a special moment for sure.

This industry can be a tough one to be in at times, but we also have to remember the journey is supposed to be a learning experience. Some of the best things can come from those experiences. It’s how we grow. Can you share a time where you felt discouraged? How did you overcome that? What advice would you give to others based on your own experience?

Yeah, you’re right, it’s all about the journey. Honestly, I still get discouraged. For example, I may have thought it went well on an audition and I’m hoping to hear for a callback, and I’m waiting for that phone to ring, then...nothing. I could audition for ten different projects, and I might only get one callback out of the ten. It is tough to stay positive and have a healthy mindset to move on and keep going because there were sometimes I thought of waving the white flag and just giving up. I guess my family and friends having my back helps me overcome the discouragement. I know that if I want to get something off my chest about a particular thing, they’ll be there to hear me out. My desire and passion for acting keep me going, honestly. When you want something so badly, you’ll do whatever it takes to achieve it. That was kind of my mindset, and I wanted to keep going and trying because I hoped that one day, it would go my way. As far as advice goes, and I know it sounds cliche, but never give up, because when you do, it’s an opportunity for someone else to take your place. If you love doing something, or if something in your mind, gut, whatever it may be, is telling you to do it, listen to it.

I’m hoping to make a career/living out of acting. However, I think it would be interesting to branch out and be a part of the business side as well. Having my own production company one day in the future would be awesome. Producing has always intrigued me, too. I prefer to act, but as long as I’m still in the entertainment business in some shape or form, I would be happy (laughs).

Funny Memory/Embarrassing Moments

I remember I was in a musical for my community theatre when I was in Junior High, and I had a solo I had to sing. I wasn’t nervous to perform or anything like that, but as I was completing my song, my voice cracked at the end. And it wasn’t just a slight voice crack, it was deafening and terrible(laughs). And of course, the girl who I had a massive crush on was sitting close to the front of the audience, so she had a great view to witness all of that(laughs), It’s funny to look back and laugh at now, but at the time, yeah, I was so embarrassed.

If you won an all exclusive trip to go anywhere, where would you go? If you could only bring one item with you what would it be?

I’ve never been out of the country, so I would have to say the Caribbean. I’ve always wanted to go there so that would be incredible. The one item I would bring would probably be a camera. I think it’d be cool to capture everything over there. Yeah, the Caribbean would be great.

Never have I ever….forgotten where I parked my car.

What’s to come…

I was involved in an independent film called, “Ring of Silence," that exposes the harsh reality of human sex trafficking. It’s, unfortunately, another huge problem we need to address. That should come out sometime later this year, I believe. I have some other projects in the mix as well that I’m excited about and just trying to stay working.
